Ton and Vincent haven't rested on their laurels this winter as they have equipped the Zodiac Top Fuel Harley with new cilinders and novel state-of-the-art long rods. The 9" rods running on a 5.25" crank with splined output shaft, combined with the 4.6" bore pistons result in a robust 175 ci. (2868 cc).
Last weekend we fired up the "long rod engine" for the first time and it sounded strong.
Shown below are the new cilinders and rods. As usual Ton and Vincent made the new parts themselves.

The pictures on the right show the latest McClure Overkill cases with "Splined Output" Crankshaft, which we have on our 2006 bike. They are brand new on the market - we have in fact the very first one that was manufactured.

Furthermore Ton re-newed some sponsorship deals and the Zodiac Team is proud to be supported by the following companies in 2006:

Main sponsor:

  • ZODIAC International

    Other sponsors:

  • Supertrapp
  • Accel
  • Spectro

    Parts & Products sponsors:

  • Goodridge
  • Midwest
  • Performance Machine
  • Vanson

We look forward to the 2006 European Championship (after some testing & tuning at the Easter Thunderball).

At the annual prize giving ceremony of Dutch Dragrace Association 'Explosion', Vincent Pels got presented the Crew Chief of the Year Award 2005.

The judging-committee stated that the team is known for its outstanding performance for many years and this couldn't have been achieved without a great crew chief.

Although Vincent couldn't attend in person, he is very pleased with the award and wants to express his thanks to the committee for this honour.

Ton Pels remains all time Supertwin Champion.

Andy Marrs of TSI Timers Europe has recently updated the Champions' Champions listings with the results of the European Finals. When adding together all points earned from 1994 (when the FIM Supertwin Championship was established) until now, Ton is the all time winner in SuperTwin Top Fuel Bike. We're very happy with this Champions' Champion title and we'll try to hold on to it. By clicking here you get the complete list of 83 riders including Year Totals.

After a rain-dominated season we lost our European title to Ronny Aasen from Norway and ended up no.3 in the Championship.

    Photo: Sharkman
We were no.2 qualifier at the European Finals at Santa Pod last weekend with a 6.786 @ 202.8 MPH, but in the first elimination round against Hans Olav Olstad the bike started to drift towards the center line, which resulted in Ton hitting the 1/4 mile reflectors, so he was out. Hans Olav Olstad managed to win the final from Ronny Aasen and with that win he passed us by a few points in the Championship standings. The top 5 of the Supertwin Championship 2005 are: 1. Ronny Aasen (Norway) : 218 points 2. Hans Olav Olstad (Norway) : 188 points 3. Ton Pels (The Netherlands) : 182 points 3. Joachim Riemer (Germany) : 168 points 3. Svein-Olaf Rolfstad (Norway) : 158 points

The 2005 season was a very strange one with 3 out of 6 races ending in a rain-off. We would like to congratulate Ronny Aasen with his first Championship title. He deserves it because he showed good performance and consistency all year. Also congratulations to Hans Olav Olstad on a good season and a good result.

We would like to express our thanks to our main sponsor: ZODIAC Performance Parts for Harley Davidson for their continuing support as well as to our other sponsors: Supertrapp, Accel and Spectro Oils.
Furthermore we thank our parts and product sponsors: Goodridge, Performance Machine, Midwest Acorn and Vanson leathers.

    We'll be back!

    Wednesday September 7, 2005

We're off to The European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway in England, which is the last race of the European Championship Tour. We are currently no.2 in the championship, 18 points behind Ronny Aasen from Norway (click here for current championship standings).

When we broke the crankshaft at round 2 of the championship in Finland, Ronny built up a lead of 18 points on us. Since then, all races ended in a rain-off, so we were never able to try and catch up with him. Hopefully the Finals will be without rain, so we can give him a run for his money.
    • Qualifying for the Pro classes will be on Friday and Saturday, September 9 and 10.
    • Raceday (eliminations) will be on Sunday the 11th.

If everything goes according plan, they will be ready before the European Finals this coming weekend.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 5, Hockenheim - Germany (August 19-21, 2005)

Ton did very well during qualifying in Hockenheim and was no.1 qualifier after each session. The final qualification standings are shown on the right.

Unfortunately it rained on Sunday and the Hockenheim race turned out to be another rain off. This was the third consecutive race that was cancelled due to rain, which makes it impossible for us to try and catch up with the no.1 in the Championship Ronny Aasen from Norway. Ronny ran very good as well at Hockenheim, as did Lorenz Stäuble and Hans Olav Olstad, so it could have been a very interesting race.

The last race of the European Championship 2005 will be in less than three weeks at Santa Pod Raceway in England. We are currently no.2 in the championship, 18 points behind Ronny...

    Wednesday August 17, 2005

We're off to the "Nitro Olympics" in Hockenheim for Round 5 of the UEM European Championship.

Next to the race-bike we will have two other ZODIAC bikes on display and we also have our ZODIAC Racing T-shirts for sale, so if you're coming to the Hockenheimring this weekend, come pay us a visit at the ZODIAC pit-box.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 4, Gardermoen - Norway (August 5-7, 2005)

    Last update: Monday August 8

After two qualification sessions on Friday the standings were as follows:

        1. Per Bengtsson (SWE) : 6.739 sec. 2. Ronny Aasen (NOR) : 6.763 sec. 3. Svein-Olaf Rolfstad (NOR) : 6.766 sec. 4. Ton Pels (NL) : 6.773 sec. 5. Svein Gottenberg (NOR) : 6.995 sec. 6. Hans Olav Olstad (NOR) : 7.014 sec. 7. Joachim Riemer (GER) : 7.015 sec. 8. Stefan Junerud (SWE) : 7.153 sec.

Because of heavy rains it was not possible to do qualifications on Saturday or eliminations on Sunday, so that was it for the weekend. Round #5 of the Championship will be in Hockenheim Germany on August 19-21.

Today Ton Pels celebrates his 35th dragrace anniversary. For a photo impression of these 35 years, please click here

Ton's dragracing career has known many highlights. Countless wins, many National Championship titles, three European titles and first European (and third in the world) to do 200 MPH on a Harley are some examples. The Zodiac dragbike has also been Europe's fastest and quickest naturally aspirated motorcycle for many years.

Ton's team - which is know as ZODIAC Racing for the last 20 years - is a family run operation, run by Ton, his wife Marianne, son Vincent and daughter Monique. Son-in-law Bert also does maintenance on the bike at the races when necessary and the last few years three generations of the Pels family have attended races. The photos not only give a great view of motorcycle dragracing through the years, but it's also a kind of family photo album of the team.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 3, Mantorp Park - Sweden (July 29-31, 2005)

Last update: Sunday July 31, 9.55 PM

Just received these great photos of this weekends race from Ivan Sansom. Thanks Ivan! (Click on the thumbs to see them full size).

RACE SUMMARY E.T. Speed Result Comments
    Qualifying 1 6.737 sec. 197.04 MPH
    317.03 KMH
#2 of 14 Clean, straight pass. Clicked off at 6.1 sec. because of the ultra-short run off area here in Mantorp.
    Qualifying 2 6.680 sec. 199.71 MPH
    321.33 KMH
#1 of 15 Consistent pass, clicked off at 6.1 sec. again. Best E.T. this season and good enough for the pole.
    Qualifying 3 6.972 sec. 164.41 MPH
    264.54 KMH
#2 of 16 Rode through serious tyre shake, then wheelspin. Had to get off the throttle to avoid the wall.
Qualifying 4 - - #2 of 16 Fourth session rained off. We're up against Svein Gottenberg in the first elimination round.
Quarter final 7.170 sec. 190.72 MPH
    306.87 KMH
WIN A lot of wheelspin at midtrack caused Ton to completely shut off. He then got on it again and took the win.
Semi final - - - Semi finals were not run because of curfew.
Final - - - Finals were not run because of curfew.

    Sunday snippets:
Because of the rain the race started late and it was 4:30 PM when the first eliminations of the Supertwin class were run. The local curfew was 6 PM, so that was it for the weekend. We climbed 2 places in the championship ranking and are now #2, so the weekend was still a succesful one for us. Next weekend we'll be at Gardermoen Norway for round 4 of the Championship.

    Saturday snippets:
Word came from European Dragrace Promotor Keith Bartlett that the Bahrain Invitational in November and the first round of the 2006 European Championship next March are now a fact, contracts are signed and sealed. Bahrain here we come!

    Friday snippets:
Joachim 'Acka' Riemer went into the sixes for the first time and did it good: 6.85 sec. Congratulations Acka and team! (Unfortunately he ended up in the sand trap afterwards, but Joachim is A-OK and the bike will be too).

    Wednesday July 27, 2005

We're off to Scandinavia for rounds 3 and 4 of the FIM/UEM European Championship. First stop will be the Veidec Nitro Festival at Mantorp Park in Sweden. And one week after that, we'll be at Gardermoen Raceway in Norway for the Drag Challenge 2005.

These two races will be extremely competitive as there are no less than 18 entries in the Supertwin class at Mantorp of which 10 bikes have been into the sixes. It will be interesting to see if we can make it an all six second field overthere. In Gardermoen there will be 17 entries and 9 six-second bikes, so a very stiff competition there as well.

Here are some more pics of Drachten we picked off the Web.

    Monday July 18, 2005

Yesterday the Zodiac team went out for some demo runs at the MPM Internationals on the temporary 1/8 mile Drachten airstrip track. Ton impressed the crowd in Drachten, as he set low E.T. and high Top Speed of the day for the motorcycles.

The Zodiac Team was outrunning the supercharged Nitro burning 4-bangers with their normally aspirated Nitro Harley and in the process, they set the quickest E.T. and highest Top Speed ever run in the Netherlands by a Super Twin (4.44 sec. @ 271 kmh / 169 mph).

    Wednesday July 13, 2005

After the damage in Alastaro, the bike is now race ready again. The next Championship round will be the end of this month in Sweden but this coming Sunday we're going to do some testing at the
    MPM Internationals
in Drachten, right here in The Netherlands.

    Monday July 4, 2005

We are pleased to have found out the reason of the damaged crankshaft we suffered in the first elimination round at Alastaro. On Sunday evening Vincent had a chat with European Champion Top Methanol Dragster Dave Wilson at the track restaurant and he told Vincent that they had trashed an engine earlier, which turned out to be caused by a production failure in the soft metal bearing shells they had used. The shells with a batch # of "8/00" were of a wrong batch. Vincent went back to the pits to check ours and the ones we had in were also "8/00" ones.

It's a shame our race had to end the way it did, but we still managed to climb a spot in the Championship rankings and we're now # 4, so the weekend was not entirely without result.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 2, Alastaro Circuit - Finland (July 1-3, 2005)

Last update: Sunday July 3, 19:20 (Finnish time)

RACE SUMMARY E.T. Speed Result Comments
    Qualifying 1 7.276 sec. 302.88 KMH
    188.24 MPH
#3 of 6 Major tyre shake. For next round we're going to adjust the wheelie bar and make changes to the clutch and fuel system.
    Qualifying 2 6.792 sec. 310.95 KMH
    193.26 MPH
#1 of 8 This run felt a lot better and Ton took the pole. We're going to step up the fuel system for the next round (tomorrow).
Qualifying 3 7.576 sec. - #1 of 9 Tyre shake again. The track was a bit slippery.
    Qualifying 4 6.823 sec. 314 KMH
    195 MPH
#1 of 9 Nice pass, but Ton had to shut off at the top end because he was drifting towards the center line.
Quarter final 6.956 sec. 306.47 KMH
    190.47 MPH
WIN Had to shut off again. Back in the pits we found out we broke the crankshaft.
Semi final - - did not show Could not fix the bike in time for the semi's. We climbed one place in the Championship rankings and are now # 4.

    Report Sunday:

In the first elimination round no.1 qualifyer Ton Pels (6.95) defeated Hans Christian Nilsen (7.48) and no.2 qualifyer Ronny Aasen (6.87) defeated Joachim Riemer (7.21). The other two quarter finals turned out to be 'upsets' when Olstad (7.14) took a wholeshot win over Stauble (7.04) and Svein Gottenberg (7.10) defeated Rolfstad (7.25).

In the semi finals Olstad took a bye run because Pels broke the crankshaft in the first round and could not fix the bike in time. The Norwegian did his first ever six-second pass (6.98) and made it to the finals. Next up was Ronny Aasen (6.86) who took out his fellow country man Svein Gottenberg (10.95).

The all Norwegian final was decided in favour of Ronny Aasen (6.75) who defeated Svein Olav Olstad (7.29). Our congratulations to Ronny on the event win and also to Lorenz and Hans Olav for their six-second passes !

Next stop: Mantorp Park - Sweden (July 28-31) for round 3 of the FIM/UEM European Championship.

    Report Saturday:

Last night there were some traction problems and the third qualification session this morning showed a lot of bikes still had some trouble with the traction. Not many riders improved, Ton kept the # 1 spot.

This afternoon the track was better and the fourth and last qualification round showed an amazing improvement for Lorenz Stauble who did his first six-second pass. Svein Olav Rolfstad also went into the sixes, which makes the final Supertwin qualifying standings as follows:

    1. Ton Pels 6.792 / 310.95 2. Ronny Aasen 6.799 / 307.19 3. Svein Olav Rolfstad 6.906 / 303.45 4. Lorenz Stauble 6.911 / 318.40 5. Hans Olav Olstad 7.009 / 328 6. Svein Gottenberg 7.097 / 305.63 7. Joachim Riemer 7.200 / 266.39 8. Hans Christian Nilsen 7.432 / 279.23

    Report Friday:

In the first qualification session this morning the Norwegians Olstad and Rolfstad did very good passes 'straight from the trailer' (7.0 for Olstad, 7.1 for Rolfstad). Ton was 3rd with a tyre shakin' 7.2 sec. pass.

The second round showed two 6.79 passes for both Ronny Aasen and Ton. The timeslips had to tell us who was 1st and 2nd. Svein Gottenberg seems to be well on his way to another 6 second pass and Finland's Petri Kalttonen fired up the bike about 100 times today and it looks like this was not in vain, because he had a solid first outing (8.6 sec.). So at the end of day 1 the situation in Supertwin Top Fuel is as follows:

        1. Ton Pels 6.792 / 310.95 2. Ronny Aasen 6.799 / 307.19 3. Hans Olav Olstad 7.075 / 297.78 4. Svein Gottenberg 7.097 / 305.63 5. Svein Olav Rolfstad 7.144 / 265.03 6. Joachim Riemer 7.581 / 258.73 7. Petri Kalttonen 8.697 / 174.33 8. Lorenz Stauble 9.284 7 187.90

    Sunday June 26, 2005

The bike is on its way to Finland for the second round of the European Championship at the Alastaro Circuit. Since it's quite a long drive to Finland, always interfering with Ton's business commitments, we have a couple of friends drive the motorhome and trailer to Alastaro, so we can fly in for the weekend. In this way our friends have made it possible for us to race at Alastaro every year since 1999, when it was added to the Championship calendar. Like last year our trailer contains the bikes and equipment of both the Zodiac and Koedam teams.

After the Main Event we spent quite a few hours in the workshop. First of all we broke the clutch hub support, so we had to make a new, stronger one. But there was more...
Back home in the workshop we found out that during qualifying the engine had endured some low-RPM stress and too-lean conditions when we were trying out different combinations to find a good set-up. Therefore we completely checked and overhauled the engine. It's as good as new again.

We made the bike a bit softer for the Alastaro track, as it smoked the tyre in the first round at the Main Event. We still don't have a real good baseline for the new clutch and fuel systems, but a lot of the parameters start to look like last year again, so we're getting there. Also we now know we are able to make too much horsepower, which is always a luxury of a problem. We're currently no. 5 in the Points Standings, so our goal for the race in Finland is to climb in the rankings.

    Main Event Review.

Ton and Vincent decided to take small steps in tuning the new fuel system during qualifying. This worked fine because with each run they improved their E.T.s with one tenth of a second, resulting in the #2 spot with 6.80 sec. @ 201 MPH. In the last qualification the clutch broke and Ton went to the workshop of Frank Brachtvogel - thanks a lot Frank! - to fix it, while Vincent stayed at the track doing the rest of the maintenance on the bike. It had been a while since they had to burn the midnight oil but as a result the bike was race ready around 2:30 AM.

In the first round on Monday he had to take on Joachim Riemer. Unfortunately the track seemed to have lost some of its traction and Ton's tyre went up in smoke causing the bike to drift towards the centerline. He had to get off the throttle to avoid hitting one of the reflectors and he was out. This made for a very disappointing start of the season for us. But on a positive note: last year's result at the Main event was exactly the same for Ton and he still managed to become European Champion after that, so we're very much looking forward to round 2 in Finland to try to make up for this. But first we will make a new clutch hub support and do some other maintenance on the bike. We are currently no.5 in the Championship Standings. The chase is on...

The team would like to congratulate Svein-Olav Rolfstad from Norway with the event win and express their thanks to their sponsors: ZODIAC, Supertrapp, Accel, Spectro, Vanson and Performance Machine Inc.

MAIN EVENT (May 28-30, 2005) Santa Pod Raceway - England

Last update: Monday May 30, 12:15 PM (UK time)

RACE SUMMARY Elapsed Time Speed Result Comments
Qualifying 1 7.114 sec. 189.85 MPH 305.47 KMH #2 of 8 Straight pass. Engine was running too lean.
Qualifying 2 7.015 sec. 195.65 MPH 314.80 KMH #1 of 9 Nice straight pass again. Still a bit too lean, but mainly it needs more clutch.
Qualifying 3 6.909 sec. 200.79 MPH 323.07 KMH #2 of 9 Solid pass. Need to step up a little for next qualifying session.
Qualifying 4 6.800 sec. 200.97 MPH 323.37 KMH #2 of 10 Improved one tenth again but broke the clutch. Just missed the pole. Finished the clutch at 2:30 AM.
Quarter final 7.329 sec. 178.01 MPH 286.42 KMH LOST Smoked the tyre, drifting the bike to the center line. Ton had to get off the throttle and lost to Joachim Riemer's 7.316.

Sunday May 8, 2005 - Speedfreaks Ball, Santa Pod Raceway England

Bad weather got in the way of doing some real testing this weekend.

Because of the heavy side wind, qualifying was run one-by-one using only one lane. In the first run the engine was running way too rich and in the second run on Saturday the heavy winds literally blew the bike sideways, into the other lane.

On Sunday Ton got one shot in between showers and ran a 7.171 sec. @ 183.57 MPH (295 km/u). The window in between the heavy showers was as short as it can get, because as Ton was hitting the brakes he got attacked by a heavy shower of hail!

The final of the Top Fuel versus Supertwin Shootout would have been Steve Carey versus Ton, but with the stiff crosswind no-one was going to risk running side-by-side. The set-up we used in the 7.1 run will give us a starting point to work from for the Main Event. We'll be back in 3 weeks...

    Monday May 2, 2005

Although Ton and Vincent thought they didn't have too much work this winter, it always turns out to be more than expected. They finished the bike just two days ago and fired it up. The engine sounded great and the new paint job looks smashing as well, so we are ready to race. In a few days we'll leave for Santa Pod Raceway in England for the 'Speedfreaks Ball' on May 6-8, where we will try to find a good set-up for the new clutch. For end-day-reports, pictures and webcam images during the weekend, please go to Event coverage at Eurodragster.com

    Monday April 4, 2005

Shown below are the new designs of our 2005 color scheme, made by Power Race Graphics. You can click the tumbnails for full size images.

    Thursday March 31, 2005

The chassis is on its wheels again. The gearbox and new clutch are in and this time the chassis is powder coated. Almost everything that had to be fabricated is done now and Vincent is working on the new front fork brace to be finished tomorrow. After that it's data logger fitting and new fuel/timer/pneumatics systems.

Ton is currently building up the #1 engine. The bottom end is ready, barrels are honed and he's currently re-buttoning the pistons. After that they will lighten the new billet rocker arms and then it's final assembly. We only used our #1 engine last season so the spare engine is still ready to go (we just need to put in the new billet rocker arms after we've lightened them).

The body is already at the painter (Sam's Custom Shop) and should be ready mid April with the new color scheme designed by Power Race Graphics.

    Monday January 10, 2005

At the annual prize giving ceremony of the KNMV (Royal Dutch Motorcycle Federation), Ton Pels and fellow racer Roel Koedam were honoured for winning European Championship titles in Supertwin Bike and Top Fuel Bike. After being interviewed (and having some good laughs about Ton's answer about his age and some "Ooh's" and "Aah's" when he answered the question about his top speeds), they received their gold medals and UEM plaques.

    Wednesday January 5, 2005

After spending quite a few hours at the computer designing and drawing the new 'one piece' clutch, Ton & Vincent went into the workshop to really make it happen. For the clutch they started out with 4 blocks of aluminum with a total weight of 110 Kg's (the piece for the Clutch hub alone weighed over 70 Kg's). After machining, the weight is now less than 10 Kg's, the other 100 Kg's ended up as chips in the dust bin. The solid Primo rear pulley also came in with "overweight", they took off 7 Kg's and brought it down to 2.5 Kg's. The engine plates are getting a 'cosmetic' face lift and have to loose some weight as well.

Below are some pictures of the new clutch and pulley and also a few of the enhanced engine plates.
